Best No Big Deal Service Project

Saturday morning. Took a subway to 163rd street, walked up a mysterious stone staircase and down a mysteriously quaint street to . . .

The Morris-Jummel Mansion!

What's the Morris-Jummel Mansion? Well, it's the oldest house in all of Manhattan! Lots of historical things happened there and lots of historical people stayed or lived there (but the most historical of these things and people tend to involve George Washington).

Why was I there? Because the Union Square 3rd Ward Elders Quorum had a service project to do! But First we had to learn! So we watched the introductory video on the mansion . . .

And looked at some rooms . . .

Some day you might see this design on your socks. (Don't worry about understanding that sentence right now)

Then it was time to serve! Our assignment: To tear out all the hedges in the garden so that they could plant new hedges later! One big problem: I didn't take any before or after pictures to help you get the big picture of what we did that day.

But here we are, tearing up that garden:

Our leader, Jeff, consulted the plans for the future garden to make sure we stayed on track. We sure made that garden ugly so that it could be pretty later.

Me, I raked.

Don and I were pretty much having a photo-taking competition, no, it was more like a race. Turns out he's decided to up the content on his blog. Great! More competition!

At one point we had a Hostess Cupcake break, courtesy of the Morris-Jumel Mansion. (yellow?)

Then, a little while later, we ate Mexican Pizza and talked about how "there's Yankee Stadium over there . . . where are they building the new one?"

With our work done, we walked down that quaint street once more and back to the drudgery of a typical Saturday (for me: lots and lots of tacos. Too many, really)

I know I'm comment boy lately...but did anyone notice how big my hair is? I had no idea.

That's the thing. You've been working like crazy while the rest of us have been sitting here, feeling sick about how big your hair was getting and knowing we couldn't do anything about it.

Good post. Sometimes the bridle must be removed from enthusiasm, as you have shown.

Oh Brigham, there is no competition… rather a mere addendum to an already amazing post. There is no way I would ever be able to top you’re post. But, check it out anyway.

Is this when we got the spicy carrot pizza after? That was so good.

And I'm glad I finally cut that hair.
