Whatever happened to heat-seeking missiles?
Do kids still talk about those? Does the Army still have them?
In backyard or playground play they were like the ultimate weapon, "Oh no, I've got a heat-seeking missile on my tail!" I think one friend of mine was piloting a submarine and still had heat-seeking missile problems.

Remember, if you are the one launching the heat-seeking missile, it's appropriate to yell "Fox Two!" but not Fox One, Three, or Four.

Me and my buddy were saying the heat-seeking missile was the argument ender.

Say you and your buddy are playing GI Joes and he keeps saying that he is winning. You get fed up and say "Oh yeah? Well I have a heat-seeking missile." You make the missile sound and then pick up his Cobra commander and throw it as you make an explosion sound.

Seems like those came on the radar so strongly from Top Gun. With no supporting evidence my guess is that movie is what blew heat seeking missiles onto popular consciousness. Nowadays kids probably play “corrupt-government” since every single movie has some sub text about the corruption of government.

I had forgotten about the joy of using a heat-seeker against an enemy (or friend). The best I suppose would be a heat-seeking nuclear missile, an entirely plausible and necessary weapon given the scope of many backyard dogfights.
