Best New Year's Resolution

As far as I can remember, I didn't make any New Year's resolutions this year. But now I've got a resolution and I mean it: I will NEVER buy another jar of red pasta sauce because yesterday I discovered how to make the most delicious pasta sauce I've ever had and there will be no turning back for me.

This is how you make the best pasta sauce: crush a can's worth of stewed tomatoes, mix them up with some onions and garlic you've been frying for a bit. Done. And it's beyond magnificent, your pound of spaghetti doesn't stand a chance.

And if you want to, adding some Italian sausage sure doesn't hurt. And maybe some nice bagged salad to finish it off?

Even Anonymous people that can't stand food posts can't deny this spaghetti was numero uno.

If you want to make your sauce a bit more robust, I'd suggest adding some balsamic vinagrette to the onions and garlic and simmer for a few minutes before you add the tomatoes. That would go nicely with the sausage or a bit of prosciutto.

Sorry, I meant balsamic vinegar, though I suppose you could use vinaigrette.

If you want to start adding spices and herbs to your sauce, you should consider basil because it always works well with tomato-based sauces (as well as rubbed sage and rosemary). Some people add oregano, but I find it's too strong and kind of minty. I would also suggest adding a can of tomato paste and/or tomato sauce along with your diced tomatoes - hopefully you're using fresh ones.

Is your blog becoming a cooking themed one?

i love food posts. i've always wanted to try making homemade pasta sauce. you would think marrying an italian, this would be a staple. but no. it's his pops that does everything from scratch. i'll have to try this one though. the baby loves italian food, so this will be a winner regardless.

I've got this super-delish recipe for homemade sauce that involves stewing tomatoes, carrots, onions, and celery for a bit, and then blending them up real nice in a blender with some olive oil. I'd be willing to email it to you, if you're interested.

My husband served his mission in Italy used much of his time learning how to make good pasta. You totally nailed it. That is a basic red sauce right there. We usually add some fresh basil, too.
It's cheap, tasty, and SO much better than anything out of a jar.

I accept all pasta recipes and put them to work quickly.

Everyone else,

Thanks for the things you wrote about pasta and sauce.
