This might be my post on the Coney Island Daft Punk show, but I can't make any promises.

Best Concert of Any Summer!

Last night was the Daft Punk show out on Coney Island. Things at Keyspan Park started out innocently enough:



Gentlemen DJs Sebastian and Kevinsky got the crowd going before and kept the crowd going between sets.


Let me familiarize you with the Amigos in attendance:

Note: Broek and Ramsey are from Los Angeles. They came out from Los Angeles for this show. And you couldn't even be bothered to catch the D train out. For shame.

The Rapture opened the night with a set that was nearly an hour long and full of their best dance jams, but they weren't pretending to be the reason anyone was there.


By the time they were done quite a crowd had gathered.


A dark curtain was drawn across the stage. We waited. And waited. And then...

Invasion.












My Impressions:

1) It was more awesome than I could take.
2) Now I think I know what it's like to have an overlord.
3) Sonically, I was destroyed. The bass was so thick I choked on it.
4) It was sheer devastation. It was amazing.

But here's one from what I'll remember as the most relentless portion of the evening, when they raved-out with Steam Machine.



Listen. I told all of you to get tickets to this concert and now you can only blame yourselves for not having been blown to bits by French Robots last night.

PS: Debated amongst ourselves post-show: what exactly were they up to in that pyramid? Were they really playing any music at all? Or were they just dropping the world's greatest mixtape/lightshow combo? This forum thread suggests that they were up to a lot more than we had thought up there. Click.

Best Concert of the Summer, the Update

Hello readers. Clark & Michael Episode #4? Hmm, I don't know. But 3 out of 4 isn't bad. or, "ain't bad", as they often say. I hope saying that doesn't mean I'll lose my link on their homepage.

Anyway, the other night I finally asked Jeff a question that had been welling up inside of me despite my efforts to ignore it. The Question: Would his early-August wedding date mean they would not be making it to the Daft Punk show on August 9? The Horrible Answer: Yes, they would not be making it to the Daft Punk show on August 9. BUT I was informed that they had tried and tried to plan their wedding date around the concert but nothing else worked. I salute that.

Last night I found this little video of Daft Punk droppin' "Da Funk" at the end of a show in Miami. Watch just a bit of it and you'll see why this is a band worth trying to plan your honeymoon around.


Just listen to the poor little camera not be able to handle the bass when the song kicks in. Awesome. I know many of you have tickets to the show, but I wish all of you were going.

Saturday morning tickets go on sale for Daft Punk's August 9th concert with the Rapture at Coney Island's Keyspan Park. This will be the best concert of the summer. Talk to anyone who was their Coachella performance last year, or talk to anyone who talked to someone who was at their Coachella performance last year, and you will be assaulted by a tsunami of superlatives that will leave you stuck sitting in a tree until the Red Cross comes along (a favorite review: "it was pretty much 3rd Nephi all over again -- the righteous throngs so moved that it instigated two hours of perfect harmony among the attendees").

But why be forced to rely on my word on someone else's word? Here's a video of the entire hour and fifteen minute set:

So, in conclusion: Daft Punk, the French Robots, will be playing Coney Island in August and tickets go on sale on Saturday and this show will be ridiculous. The $50 ticket price might be a little scary, but they've got three opening acts (including the also significantly popular Rapture, which is an absolute cherry ontop of this sundae) and I can't imagine it's cheap to set up a giant pyramid and lightshow. There's going to be some kind of Madison Square Garden Madonna/Justin Timberlake production values going on. Honestly, if you're like in New Zealand or Salt Lake or something and reading this, this is totally the sort of concert worth traveling for.

A very frustrating footnote: Oddly, I cannot figure out who is selling these tickets. Ticketmaster has listings for the three other shows of the tour (in LA, Colorado, and Seattle) but nothing on New York yet. But this is the Brooklyn Vegan post about tickets going on sale, and Brooklyn Vegan wouldn't lie.
