Best Worst Internet Problem

Okay, the worst thing about Macs is sometimes you try to connect to the internet and then it tells you that you have a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet...and by "may not" it means "definitely can't." Sometimes I can figure out how to fix this problem and other times (now) I can't and wind up at the library with the hobos because I need wireless that bad.

A mighty prize for the person who can remind me how to slay the self-assigned ip dragon.
And a mightier prize for the knight who can explain how this happens in the first place.

It most likely has nothing to do with your Mac and everything to do with your router. If you are able to get on other wireless networks, this is the best guess. Try restarting your router. Sometimes they need a reboot. If that doesn't work, try restarting your modem, then restart your router. You may also want to turn your computer's AirPort off, then on again.

Or, I don't know what I'm talking about. Good luck.

Sorry for posting again, but the self-assigned IP usually happens when your computer is connected to your router, but is not connected to the Internet. Which means it's either a problem with the router or your modem. Which is why all the restarting.

Such instant help! Ok, but I'm not using the wireless because I got mad at it. I plugged the wire right into my computer. Reset computer. Unplug replugged modem. Repeated. Repeated. Varied. Nothing. Geeze.

You restarted your computer and modem, but what about the router? This is a problem of your computer trying to get an IP from your router (because your router is the one broadcasting the signal from the modem) and failing, so it gives itself one hoping it will work. Obviously, it didn't.

I don't have much else to suggest, other than playing with the settings on the router. I'm not good at tech support in comments.
